Every year I travel to Cornwall before Easter to deliver a carload of paintings to the Mill Gallery in Coverack on the Lizzard. This is really only an excuse to go to Cornwall and to revel in the wild beauty of the coast, the flowers, sea birds, and the empty roads and coast path. I take waterproofs, a sketch book and camera.
This year I filled two sketch books with drawings, colour and ideas. When sketching I try to be accurate in my written description of the place and moment so that later in my studio I have enough information to develop the initial idea into a finished painting or collage. In these books I will note down what was of interest, the colours and maybe draw the sun in the sketch to show where the light source was. I also take a lot of photographs. These help, but they are never as good or helpful as the sketch. Although the camera does not lie, it will not show the distant red jumper of a walker on the coast, or the pink buoy that caught my interest in the first place.
After delivering my paintings to the Mill Gallery in Coverack I walked to the tiny harbour and sketched in the brilliant sunshine.
Here you can see examples of how the sketches I make influence the finished picture, in three different locations; Church Cove, Cadgewith Beach and Coverack.
