During January I spent a week in Spain on the Costa del Sol. The weather was not balmy, calm and sunny, but wild and unpredictable. As a painter of seascapes this suited me very well. On two mornings I got up before the sun rose above the sea to enjoy the gunmetal sea and the waves catching the sun. The horizon was white with breaking waves. The scudding clouds made the scene much more dramatic than it would otherwise have been. The sea roared and pounded. The apricot sun was reflected in pale yellow between the crowding waves. Seagulls skimmed the waves looking for breakfast. My feelings were of exhilaration and awe at the power of the sea.
I have done a number of wild seascapes inspired by my early morning sketching sessions.

When visiting a country out of season many things become more accessible and exciting. On the morning we visited Fuengerola harbour the fishermen were mending their nets. Watching the men work I found both timeless and interesting.
