This piece was done directly from my sketch book very soon after a brief visit to Newquay in northern Cornwall. It was winter and the sea came crowding in on bands of spluttering sun tipped waves. Hardy surfers could be seen on the horizon, small dark specs riding their boards before a wave, or as round dark blobs paddling seawards. The sun was already low in the sky. The wind whipped the sand in the foreground so that it looked like a pale moving band of pale hair. It was cold, but wonderfully invigorating.
