While on a trip to north Wales near Harlech I was able to spend a whole day sketching while wedged on the side of a steep bank below a waterfall. I have done a number of pieces from this visit, trying to convey the power, magic and presence of the place so that the spectator of the art work interacts with the art work and feels something of the ‘magic’ which engaged me. I wish the viewer of the work to feel the power, space and tension of the place. I was looking for the initial empathy and essence of the water, the trees and rocks.
Under the waterfall as it tumbled down between large boulders was a deep dark pool. The pool was large and deep enough to swim in. but the water was icy cold. On the far horizon was a patch of blue beyond the trees. In amongst the green of the leaf canopy flashes of light where the sun peneterated the wood gave life to the scene.
