The poppies in this painting were growng in a field of rape which had already set. The yellow rape flowers had turned into seed pods of pale aquamarine blue/green. At the field edge a dark wood. The poppy flowers were lit up by the last rays of the evening sun , so that many of the plants had gold haloes of light around them, which turned an ordinary scene into a thing of energy and beauty.
